A Welcome Letter from PTO President, Amy Maddux

On behalf of the entire PTO board, welcome back to school! I hope that all of our new and returning Panther families have braved the paperwork load and are settling back in to a routine.

This year, we plan to include monthly letters from the PTO president in the newsletter to help keep everyone up to date on what is going on with the PTO.

The FBMS PTO exists for one purpose: to support the students, teachers, and staff at the school. We do that with our volunteer manpower and funds raised.

If you want to volunteer, check out our “Volunteer” page on the PTO website for opportunities. (And, don’t forget to register as a volunteer through HISD’s VIPS system--more information is on the volunteer page.)

If you want to help raise funds, keep an eye out for more information on our upcoming fall fundraiser, Football, Foam, and FUN! It’s a fundraising opportunity for the school (no product sales!) that culminates in a super fun, active, event during Homecoming Week. The event is during the school day and all students participate. Also keep an eye out in upcoming weeks for information about Tailgate, a carnival type event before the 7th grade football game during Homecoming week. The PTO sponsors Tailgate as an opportunity for all of FBMS’s amazing clubs and organizations to raise money for their own endeavors.

Curious about what we do with the funds the PTO raises? Every single teacher receives a $100 reimbursement for supplies they buy for classrooms with their own money. In addition, teachers may apply for PTO grants for additional funds, and last year we awarded tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of grants that went directly into classrooms. In addition, last year we funded many much-needed improvements for our 60+ year old campus. One big initiative that has been several years in the making is the replacement of the old, dilapidated, 1950s-era gym lockers.

That project has been a true labor of love and far more difficult than it should have been (the project should have been completed over the summer, but the locker company shipped the wrong size lockers . . . .), but thanks to the perseverance of many FBMS parents (and even former parents still working on this!), the CORRECT lockers are currently en route to FBMS and will be delivered on Wednesday! Soon our athletes and PE students will have brand new gym lockers to use during their gym classes!

If you aren’t a member yet of the PTO, I encourage you to sign up. Memberships are available for as little as $5 or as much as $500, with extra amounts paid over the basic membership going to support the endeavors mentioned above. And please join us this Thursday at 6pm in the community room for our first PTO general meeting of the year. The business meeting will be short and followed by coffee with our new principal, Ms. Honore. This is a great opportunity to hear straight from her about what is going on at the school and ask any questions you might have. I look forward to seeing you there!
