September 9th Legislative Update

In HISD news this week, Laura Isensee of Houston Public Media reported that TEA Commissioner Mike Morath sent a letter to HISD’s Superintendent Dr. Lathan and the Board of Trustees’ President Diana Davila about potential sanctions for Wheatley High School’s years of failed accountability ratings. This letter officially kicks off TEA’s sanctions process for HISD. Other news outlets have not confirmed the reporting. On Thursday the Board held their monthly agenda review meeting. The Board rarely votes during agenda review, but this time they voted 7-1 to direct the Superintendent to appeal TEA’s rating of Wheatley HS. Dr. Lathan and her staff had not intended to appeal because the administrators had not found any errors in TEA’s calculations. Full details can be found here. Ms. Isensee also interviewed the principal of Wheatley HS, Mr. Williams. He is hopeful more progress can be made this year for his students.

This Thursday, September 12, is an HISD School Board Meeting. These meetings are held monthly at the Hattie Mae White Administration Building at 4400 West 18th Street at 5:00 p.m. The meetings are open to the public and can be streamed online or watched on your local access television station. This month’s agenda includes a discussion of progress in College and Career Readiness standards.

Wednesday was the deadline for candidates to file for Texas House District 148, Representative Farrar’s old seat. It will be a very crowded field as fourteen people have filed to run in the November 5th election. To see the list of candidates, click here. HISD Trustee Santos had announced she was considering running, but she did not ultimately file. As always, if you have questions please feel free to reach out to me: legislative@FBMSPTO.org.
